Flood Warning
National Weather Service Gray ME
4:39 AM EST Wed Jan 10 2024
FLOOD WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 AM EST THIS MORNING...
* WHAT...Urban area and small stream flooding caused by excessive
rainfall is expected.
* WHERE...Portions of south central and southwest Maine, including
the following counties, in south central Maine, Kennebec, Knox,
Lincoln, Sagadahoc and Waldo. In southwest Maine, Androscoggin,
Cumberland and York.
* WHEN...Until 1000 AM EST.
* IMPACTS...Streams continue to rise due to excess runoff from heavy
rainfall and snowmelt. Low-water crossings are inundated with
water and may not be passable. It will take several hours for all
the water from these storms to work through local drainage
systems, particularly in urban areas
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
- At 4:34 AM EST, Between 0.5 and 1.5 inches of rain have fallen
over a rapidly ripening snowpack. The cumulative runoff is
overwhelming standard drainage systems. This runoff will reach area streams later this morning,
continuing the flood risk even after the rain ends.
- Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Portland, Lewiston, Rochester, South Portland, Auburn,
Biddeford, Brunswick, Augusta, Westbrook and Kittery.
- The heaviest rainfall is along and south of the I-95
corridor.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.
Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding.
