Statement as of 3:25 am EDT on June 23, 2019
National Weather Service cold water safety message...
* warm air temperatures in the upper 70s in the mountains to mid 80s
near the coast today may cause people to underestimate the dangers
of the cold water temperatures which are currently only around the
low 60s across Sebago Lake and Lake Winnipesaukee, and low to mid
60s in the regions smaller lakes and rivers.
* The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to anyone
immersed in the water. Even when the water temperature is below 70
degrees, hypothermia and loss of dexterity can occur in 45 minutes
or less. Anyone on small boats, canoes, or kayaks should plan
accordingly if recreating this weekend and use caution to avoid
this threat. Paddle smart from the start and always wear your life
jacket!
