Remember, we're under a heat advisory between 11 A.M. and 8 P.M. this evening. Take it seriously folks, and for Pete's sake don't neglect your pets!

This morning we have partly sunny skies with  a chance of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. Some thunderstorms may produce gusty winds, heavy rainfall, and frequent lightning this afternoon. Hot with highs in the lower 90s. Southwest winds around 10 mph gusting to 30 mph this afternoon. Heat index values in the upper 90s.

Tonight we'll have partly cloudy conditions with a chance of showers and thunderstorms during evening hours. Areas of fog after midnight with some thunderstorms producing gusty winds, heavy rainfall, and frequent lightning in the evening. Visibility one quarter mile or less at times after midnight. Humid with lows around 70°F. Winds will be light and variable. Gusts up to 20 mph in the evening. Heat index values in the lower 90s early in the evening.

HOOTENANNY FRAPPE

1½ cups Sugar

3½ cups Water

1 (6 oz) can frozen Orange juice concentrate, thawed and undiluted

2 (10 oz) packages frozen sliced Strawberries in syrup, thawed

1 (8 oz) can unsweetened crushed Pineapple, undrained Ginger ale, chilled

 

Combine sugar and water in a large saucepan, cook over medium heat, stirring constantly. Remove from heat, stir in orange juice concentrate, strawberries, and pineapple.  Pour mixture into a 13" x 9" pan, freeze until firm.  To serve, let mixture thaw at room temperature for 30 minutes. For each serving, spoon 1/2 cup mixture into glass, and add 1 cup ginger ale, stir until slushy.  Re-freeze remainder of mixture and use as needed.

MIXED-BERRY SMOOTHIE

3 servings

1 cup strawberry or raspberry low-fat yogurt

1 cup fat-free (skim) milk

1 tbsp powdered sugar

1 bag (14 to 16 oz) frozen mixed berries (strawberries, blackberries, blueberries and raspberries), slightly thawed

 

Place yogurt, milk and powdered sugar in blender or food processor.  Cover and blend on high speed about 30 seconds.  Add half of the berries. Cover and blend on high speed 1 minute. Add remaining berries. Cover and blend on high speed about 1 minute, adding a small amount of additional milk if necessary, until smooth. Serve immediately.  

Substitution

If you can't find frozen berries at your supermarket, substitute 1 ½ cups each of frozen unsweetened strawberries and unsweetened red raspberries.

 

Or, if you're an adult:

 

BLOODY MARY MIX

2 quarts

1 (46 oz) can tomato juice

1 (10½ oz) can beef broth, undiluted

2 tsp seasoned salt

1 tsp instant minced onion

1 tsp freshly ground pepper

1 tsp Celery salt

1 tsp Celery seeds

¼ tsp Tabasco sauce

3 tbsp lime juice

¼ cup Worcestershire sauce

1 cup Vodka (optional)

Combine all the ingredients, except Vodka, stir well and chill for 8 hours.  Stir in Vodka, if desired, just before serving. Serve over ice.
