Someone asked me if solar panels need to be mounted on the roof of your house or business.

No, most definitely not.

I’m not any kind of solar expert but a quick google search about roof-mount stuff as opposed to ground-mountings was very informative.

A few quick things before you click on the URL below.\

First, ground mounts for solar panels will cost you a bit more than the roof mounting angle. Having said this it has advantages over the stuff on the roof.

For example it’s much easier to keep them clean which increases their efficiency. It’s easier to maintain them too, you’re not up on a roof, just a step ladder.

Also, and this is just me talking, it’s easier to put the ground mounts up. You’re using a shovel and some pipe rather than a drill and risking goofing up holes in the roof of the house that could cause a leak.

One other thing, and I just learned this part myself – the hotter a solar panel gets the less efficient it is. There are two base colors of panels, the real dark colored ones and the silver ones. My personal opinion is to get the silver ones.

Also, and this makes sense to me – don’t spray water on solar panels when they’re hot. They’re covered in glass and that will crack if it’s hot and you spray water on them.

But, if you want to know how to do a DIY ground mount, read this article.

Good luck.
