#MEwx Sun and clouds with colder temps today - can you power a heat pump with solar panels, and how many do you need?

Good morning Augusta.

I have an Ambient WS 5000 weather station here where you can view real time weather readings from Here online by clicking here.

This morning we have partly sunny skies with highs in the mid 30s. Winds are Northwest 15 to 20 mph gusting to 30 mph.

Tonight we’ll have mostly clear conditions with lows in the lower 20s. Winds will be West 10 to 15 mph.

We received a dusting of snow here over the past 24 hours.

The  wind is West Northwest between  10.1 MPH and 14.8 MPH. Our peak wind gust since midnight is 34 MPH.

The Relative pressure is 29.74, the Absolute pressure is 29.54 and rising with a weather graphic indicating sun and clouds.

Augusta’s humidity is 62%, the  outdoor temperature is 28.9°F, the dew point is 17.2°F and the wind chill is 21.1°F.

Visibility is 10.0 miles / 16.1 kilometers with mostly cloudy skies.

The UV index is 0 placing the average person at no risk and the solar radiation reading is W/m2. Sunrise is 6:25 AM, sunset is 7:03 PM, moonrise is 12:12 PM and Moonset is 3:47 AM. The moon is  waxing crescent and is 60% illuminated. We’ll have 12 hours 39 minutes of daylight today. The next Full Moon is on April 6 with our next new moon being on April 20, 2023 .

How about using solar panels to run your heat pumps. After all, they are electric, so might as well get the power for free, right? Well, after you buy the solar panels that is.

So, how many solar panels do you need for the heat pumps?

What I’m seeing here is that solar panels can power a whole host of things and the list gets longer as solar technology and alternative energy products advance.

The bottom line seems to be this – no matter what kind of solar panels you want, it isn’t going to be cheap.

Roof-mounted systems, be they the regular panels you see on houses now, or the panels that look like roof shingles, there are pros and cons for each one.

I’m of a fairly practical bend and always have been. During our increasingly hot summers it bears noting that the hotter a solar panel gets, the less efficient it is. That’s why you see web and blog articles that tell you the roof-racks for panels which may not look the best tend to be more efficient because air can get under the panels and keep them cooler, hence more efficient.

Am I going to get solar panels? Yes, I am. But I’m really leaning towards regular solar panels mounted on ground racks rather than on the roof.

Is this more expensive to install? Yep, darn right it is, but they’re cooler in the hot months, hence more efficient, and are easier to clean snow off of in the winter.

The extra cost of ground-mounts can be recovered quickly in the increased efficiency and lower maintenance  costs.

Just my two cents worth on it, others can and will differ and that’s all right.
