How about a "Better Apple Crisp" for dessert tonight?

Apple Crusty (A better apple crisp)

5 or 6 apples, peeled and sliced (about 4 cups; I often use more)

½ to ¾ cup pure maple syrup

½ cup flour

½ cup rolled oats

¼ to ½ cup butter

½ tsp cinnamon (optional but why wouldn't you use it?)

½ tsp nutmeg (see cinnamon note)

Preheat oven to 375⁰.  Arrange apple slices in a buttered 8" square pan and pour maple syrup over them.  Mix flour, oats, brown sugar, salt, and spices.  Cut in butter until mixture looks like small bread crumbs.  Sprinkle over apples and syrup.  Bake about 35 minutes.

Serve with ice cream, frozen yogurt, whipped cream, etc. etc.
