Special Weather Statement
Expires 1:15 PM EDT on June 21, 2012
Statement as of 10:09 am EDT on June 21, 2012
A strong backdoor cold front will cross portions of southwest Maine through
early this afternoon.
Doppler weather radar continued to show a strong backdoor cold front moving
westbound over easternmost portions of Oxford County, extending southward
through Androscoggin and Cumberland counties late this morning. This front
will continue to move to the west through Oxford, Cumberland and York
counties through early this afternoon.
Ahead of the front expect oppressive heat as temperatures soar quickly
through the 90s. As the front passes through southwest
Maine, expect temperatures to quickly drop 10 to 20 degrees in an hours time
as winds shift to the northeast. Places like Falmouth, Portland, Cape
Elizabeth, Old Orchard and Saco will have a cooling breeze by late this
morning. There will also be some modest relief in towns like gray, Lewiston
and perhaps as far southwest as Windham and Gorham.
Along the Maine and New Hampshire border and points west, temperatures will
continue to soar. Temperatures in a few communities over southern New
Hampshire may approach the century mark. A heat advisory remains in effect
over interior York County Maine and much of southern New Hampshire.
Be alert as isolated strong thunderstorms may form on this boundary this
afternoon.
