Bathroom

The dreaded cleaning of the bathroom: we as cleaners live to clean up after everyone that has been in the house, used the bathroom and left all of their

germs behind. We as cleaners are left to be the defenders of clean spaces. Cleaning the bathroom should be easier than the kitchen because it is a smaller

area, but the need for disinfecting is a little more important just as molds and mildews will grow more often in the bathroom so preventative and continued

cleaning will be needed.

Regular cleaning is up to you, some people will clean a bathroom twice a week while others only will deep clean once a week but using these household products

and tips will save you money. It will be left up to you to care of your porcelain, ceramic and other easily scratched bathroom fixtures. Don’t use an abrasive

on these items instead use particular tips and ideas presented here that are meant for surfaces that will not scratch.

Cleaning your shower stall is made easy by wiping it down with full strength vinegar to cut soap scum and hard water residues. Simply wiping the walls down

with a sponge will cut dirt that you can wash down the drain with clean water.

You can cut soap scum and oils left behind from your skin by wiping your shower or tub with ammonia and a wet cloth. Rinsing your tub or shower with hot

water after you have wiped down the entire area will also help clean your drain.

You can clean your shower curtain of soap scum; mildew and grease build up by wiping it down with vinegar or ammonia. Using either full strength will get

your shower curtain back to looking new.

For the very bottoms of your shower curtain where it is most difficult to scrub, use a salt water paste and a scrub brush for a deep clean and then wipe

with vinegar for removal of additional ‘gunk’.

If you are not interested in cleaning the shower curtain by hand you can put it in the washing machine with four cups of vinegar and let it soak over night.

This kills, neutralizes and cleans easily without the hassle of scrubbing.

Is your shower running a little slow? You can unclog your showerhead by soaking it in vinegar for about an hour. If it is really clogged boil your vinegar

and soak your showerhead in this for about an hour to loosen all the hard water and lime. This should only be used on metal showerheads, if you have plastic

you will have to stick with the soaking in cool vinegar to remove hard ware and lime in your showerhead.

If your showerhead is clogged but you can’t unscrew it to soak in vinegar, bring the vinegar to the showerhead! Using a plastic bag filled with vinegar

lift it up to the showerhead and tape it on there over night. Be sure not to tape on your paneling, or paint as you could pull the finish off! The next

morning take off the bag and the vinegar, your showerhead will be much cleaner. Repeat as needed to reach areas deep inside of the clogged showerhead.

If you have shower doors instead of a shower curtain, you can add wiping the shower door walls off with vinegar or ammonia to your weekly cleaning to keep

soap and hard water stains to a minimum. Using either full strength will leave you with a clean shine that you will be proud of.

If you have particular hard water stains that have been building up over the years, you can use a cream of tarter and vinegar paste to loosen these stains.

The shower door tracks will often get moldy if you don’t pay particular attention in this area. Simply pouring full strength vinegar into the tracks of

the shower door and letting it sit over night before rinsing will keep mold and hard water at bay.

To clean really hard water stains off of your tub, walls, or on your faucets, soak a cloth in vinegar and lay it over the stain over night. The next morning,

you can use a baking soda and vinegar paste with a toothbrush to finish tackling this job.

Using a wet towel to keep dust off the corners of the floor during the week will relieve some of the deep cleaning that you have to do each week.

Do you have a home with twenty-some- year-old decals in the tub? You can get rid of these decals without hurting your tub finish! Soaking the area with

full strength vinegar and continuing to ‘pick’ at the area with your fingernails will loosen the sticky glue used to hold these on. You can soak decals

by filling the bottom of the tub with vinegar overnight.

Taking a towel wet with vinegar and wiping down the radiator is an instant air freshener that will last all day long.

To clean out smelly sink drains pouring a cup of vinegar down the drain will put a stop to the smell.

Pouring a cup of ammonia down the drain will cut through hair and hard water that is built up in your drains and it will cut down on odors at the same time!

If the ring around the bottom of your sink is getting harder and harder to clean, try using a little toothpaste on your cloth as you rub this area. Over

a few cleanings this stain will disappear.

Using a cream of tarter and vinegar mixture you can cut through all the grime that has been building up in your sink. As the cream of tarter acts as a mild

abrasive the vinegar will help cut through the grease.

Cleaning the toilet is nobody’s favorite, but when you pour in two cups of vinegar twice a week, overnight, you will find that you have to scrub much less

often.

If you wear dentures, putting two denture tablets in the toilet twice a week will help keep your toilet clean where your will not have to scrub as often.

You can also clean your toilet with ammonia, by pouring two cups in the toilet twice a week so that you won’t have to scrub. You will have to let this sit

overnight so doing it last thing at night is easiest.

For tough stains, you can use a baking soda and vinegar paste with an old scrub brush or toothbrush to get the under the rim stains that the soaking vinegar

or ammonia can’t reach.

You can use a lemon juice and salt paste to scrub around where the seat attaches to the toilet for an easy clean. Sometimes you may have to use a toothbrush

but other times a simple q-tip will do the job.

If your drain is running a little slow, pouring a gallon of boiling water down the drain will help loosen and soften what might be in the drain.

You can use baking soda to clean out your drain by pouring one cup of baking soda down the drain and then three cups of boiling vinegar. The baking soda

and vinegar causes bubbles, which can loosen certain clogs in your drain.

Using a plunger on a drain that just won’t go down in the sink will be just as effective as it is in the toilet.

If you want to kill particular bad germs in your sink you can wipe it down with hydrogen peroxide. Keeping germs at bay with small children in the home

is often needed to keep everyone from getting sick at the same time.

Isopropyl alcohol will work as a disinfectant that you can use anywhere in the bathroom. In the shower to wipe the walls and the shower down, you can use

it to wipe down the sink or the toilet as well.

You can use baking soda on a wet cloth to scour any non-scratch able surface in your bathroom and then rinse with warm water.

You can use vinegar and baking soda to get rid of many stains in the toilet with a little added elbow power behind it!

To remove rust in the bathroom you can use full strength lemon juice to soak on the spot until the rust disappears. Soaking overnight works best if you

can.
