Since the presidential election is heating up, I wanted to keep you current with election year terminology.  You may recognize these particular definitions from “The Devil’s Dictionary” By Ambrose Bierce.

Enjoy them and may they help you in interpreting the many things being said by the candidates.

Regarding foreign policy:

ALLIANCE, n.  In international politics, the union of two thieves who

have their hands so deeply inserted in each other's pockets that they

cannot separately plunder a third.

ANOINT, v.t.  To grease a king or other great functionary already

sufficiently slippery. (Foreign policy issues)

GUNPOWDER, n.  An agency employed by civilized nations for the

settlement of disputes which might become troublesome if left unadjusted.  By most writers the invention of gunpowder is ascribed to

the Chinese, but not upon very convincing evidence.  Milton says it

was invented by the devil to dispel angels with, and this opinion

seems to derive some support from the scarcity of angels.

Regarding Domestic policies:

APPEAL, v.t.  In law, to put the dice into the box for another throw. (Now you know why Trump already has 11 Supreme Ct. nominees)

Regarding Campaign Speeches:

ARENA, n.  In politics, an imaginary rat-pit in which the statesman/woman

wrestles with his/her record.

Regarding Campaign press coverage:

BORE, n.  A person who talks when you wish him/her to listen. (Trump)

CRITIC, n.  A person who boasts himself hard to please because nobody

tries to please him/her. (Fox political reporters)

CYNIC, n.  A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are,

not as they ought to be.  Hence the custom among the Scythians of

plucking out a cynic's eyes to improve his/her vision. (Now I know why I’m blind)
