Severe Thunder Storm Watch

Severe Thunderstorm Watch
Expires 3:00 AM EDT on July 24, 2012
Statement as of 7:15 PM EDT on July 23, 2012
The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a
Severe Thunderstorm Watch for portions of
western and southern Maine and northern New Hampshire
Effective this Monday night and Tuesday morning from 7:15 PM until
3:00 am EDT.
Hail to 1.5 inches in diameter... thunderstorm wind gusts to 70
mph... and dangerous lightning are possible in these areas.
The Severe Thunderstorm Watch area is approximately along a 50
statute miles east and west of a line from 15 miles south of
Laconia New Hampshire to 85 miles north of Augusta Maine. For a
complete depiction of the watch see the associated watch outline
update (wous64 kwns wou5).
Remember... a Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are
favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch
area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for
threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements
and possible warnings. Severe thunderstorms can and occasionally
do produce tornadoes.
Discussion... numerous strong to severe storms were developing east
across VT and srn Quebec this evening ahead of a deepening upper
trough and advancing cold front across srn Ontario. An axis of
uncapped unstable air was situated from NH into wrn ME where a moist
and relatively warm boundary layer should continue to allow for a
few storms to remain robust while moving east across the Connecticut
River and into NH/wrn ME. Mid level flow may strengthen coincident
with the advancing storms and thus contribute to maintaining
organization to the convective system. Hail to 1.5 inches will be
possible with some of the more intense cores. An increase in
damaging wind potential will be possible if convective system can
maintain its linear structure in the presence of increasing large
scale ascent with the digging upper trough.

Aviation... a few severe thunderstorms with hail surface and aloft
to 1.5 inches. Extreme turbulence and surface wind gusts to 60
knots. A few cumulonimbi with maximum tops to 500. Mean storm
motion vector 27030.
