Special Statement Statement as of 10:40 am EDT on July 31, 2014 Potential for strong thunderstorms this afternoon. Conditions are favorable for some strong thunderstorms this afternoon across New Hampshire and western Maine. These thunderstorms will have the potential for large hail along with gusty winds and frequent lightning. Thunderstorms are already ongoing across parts of upstate New York and will arrive in western New Hampshire before 2 PM. Storms will then move north and east across western Maine before weakening. The areas with the greatest risk for strong storms are across northern and central New Hampshire and the mountains of western Maine.   Persons planning outdoor activities such as boating or hiking need to pay close attention to the weather today. The National Weather Service in gray has issued a dense fog advisory. which is in effect until 9 am EDT this morning. * Visibilities... one quarter mile or less. * Timing... dense fog will thin and lift between 8 and 9 am. * Impacts... dense fog will be present through much of the morning commute. Rapid changes in visibility over short distances will be likely.   Precautionary/preparedness actions... A dense fog advisory means visibilities will frequently be reduced to less than one quarter mile. If driving... slow down... use your headlights... and leave plenty of distance ahead of you.
