Good morning from the northwest end of Augusta , Maine . We have a partly sunny morning with today's temps expected to reach the low 70's. Last night's rain is drying up quite nicely. This morning's readings are: a relative humidity of 95% with a Dew Point of 56.3ºF. The temperature is 58.4ºF. The wind velocity this morning is between 1.3 mph and 3.0 mph out of the West. The highest gust recorded in the past month remains a boring 23.3 mph.   our Barometric pressure is 29.58 and rising. I have been asked where I get my weather data readings from. Like many others, I have my own source of weather data from weather instrumentation that I own and have put up myself. If you are truly a hard-core do-it-yourself person, there are online instructions on how to build your own anemometer, rain gauge, barometer and thermometer. Any "DIY" web search can get you loads of directions on how to do such things. It helps if you are a handy "gadget t

The final offering on the short series about the nighttime display of the "northern lights" appears below.   Some historic legends of the Lights 'Aurora borealis', the lights of the northern hemisphere, means 'dawn

Local Weather

Tonight we will have temps in the 50's again with another chance of patchy fog.     As we again enter the winter months, a short series on the nighttime display of the "northern lights" is interesting.   What are Northern Lights? The bright dancing lights of the aurora are actually collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the earth's atmosphere. The lights a

Monday's local weather

For those who work out of doors, or happen to be kids standing at a bus stop each morning, knowing what "wind chill" is, and hence whether to t

Augusta's local weather

Owing to special circumstances, there will be no postings to this blog for the next 11 days. Good morning from the northwest end of Augusta , Maine . IT is an overcast and somewhat dreary morning. This morning's readings are: a relative humidity of 89% with a Dew Point of 56.3ºF. The temperature is 59.6ºF. We barely have any wind   today, my readings ranging from 1.3 mph to 4.0 mph out of the North by NorthWest. The highest gust recorded in the past month has yet to exceed 17.9 mph.   our Barometric pressure is 29.83 and rising. We are expecting rain today, with windy and rainy conditions predominating by this afternoon. As summer draws to an end, I thought it might be of interest for many readers to know what the "heat index" that we all hear aboput during the summer months really is. In my next posting, I will post the Wind Chill explanation.   *Heat indexFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia* The heat index (HI) is an index that combines air te

The state will shortly be putting up its seasonal fall folage web site showing where the best locations for fall color is to be found.     *Why do Leaves change color in the fall?* (Downloaded from: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/10/071012104737.htm ) The leaves of trees and other plants contain three main pigments: carotene, ant

Local Weather

Good morning from the northwest end of Augusta , Maine . IT is a bright and sunny morning, almost cloudless and in general a great way to wake up. This morning's readings are: a relative humidity of 87% with a Dew Point of 57.7ºF. The temperature is 61.7ºF. We barely have wind   today, highest gust up to 2.7 mph out of the South by Southeast. The highest gust recorded in the past week remains 17.9 mph.   our Barometric pressure is 29.85 and falling. There has been no rainfall in the past 24 hours. Our overnight temperatures are beginning to drop into the 40's now, and we are starting to see some color in the Maple and oak trees, and the vegetable gardens are almost completely done now. It is definitely September weather, and the usual regiment of cold rain and warm weather storms haven't yet begun. However, it is now that time of year when the weather will be as unpredictable as the win record of the Boston Red Sox pitching staff.   Loyalty is trust.

Local Weather Sept. 11, 2011

Good morning from the northwest end of Augusta , Maine .    This morning's readings are: a relative humidity of 88% with a Dew Point of 51.6ºF. At 4:00 a.m. it was 44 ºF. It is presently 55.8ºf outside. When the temperature begins to regularly register 40ºF and lower, we will begin reporting wind chill as well. As you may recall, wind chill is, in simple terms, a calculation of the air temperature and wind velocity.   For example, today's wind chill is 56.5ºF, not of real concern to us right now. But when it is snowing… We have a wind velocity gusting between 1.3 mph and 4.0 mph out of the West Southwest. The highest gust recorded in the past week remains 17.9 mph.   our Barometric pressure is     30.08 and rising. There has been no rainfall in the past 24 hours. In rememberance of the events of today in New York City 10 years ago, I join with everyone in the reflective courage unique to those of us who lived the astonished shock of that day, and wa

Local Weather - Augusta ME

Good morning from the northwest end of Augusta , Maine .   Hurricane Katia has passed to our East. We have some slight cloud cover with our gusty wind conditions. This morning's readings are: a relative humidity of 62% with a Dew Point of 46.7                   ºF. It is 59.8ºf outside. And we have a wind velocity gusting between   4.0 mph and     12.3 mph out of the North by Northwest. The highest gust recorded in the past week remains 17.9 mph.   our Barometric pressure is   29.87 and rising. There has been no rainfall in the past 24 hours. Since today is windy with a lower level of dew point and relative humidity, we're drying out more than we were yesterday. Given the recent rainfall, this is a good state of affairs.   In the annual, unwinnable discussion over the amount of rainfall, we are somewhere in the plus collum, unless you live in a flood region, where you are definitely in the minus colum. As one weather person recently said, "just belie

Local Weather- Augusta Maine

The highest gust recorded in the past week remains 17.9 mph.   our Barometric pressure is 29.77 and falling. There has been no rainfall in the past 24 hours. Just for the record, I have two barometers in the house, both read the same, and both are indicating impending rainfall. However, it would seem that the eastern passing of Katia is causing the barometric reading that is predicting rain. However, a glance via the orbital weather-eyes show that we aren't going to get rain t

Remember, the majority of Lee's forces are still far South of us. The b

That includes us.   Some individuals asked again about the difference between Dew Point and Humidity. So, I went to Wikipedia for a good description: Dew pointFr

Terry Pratchett   Weather readings on this blog are taken from my LaCrosse wireless weather station, 2800 series, in real time. This is NOT an airport, where most such readings come via an authoritative governmental source of some sort. For example, my anemometer is not mounted 30 feet above the nearest obstruction within 300 feet. It is mounted at about 11 feet above the ground at the edge of a cornfield on the north
